City of apartments.

Author: cc  |  Category: random thoughts

When you think of New Zealand, you think of fresh air, millions of sheeps, breath-taking scenery and probably, Lord of the Rings. Auckland, being the busiest city should be no different right? Well, think again. Nowadays, a walk in the city gives you this.

That’s right, blocks and blocks of apartment buildings. They are everywhere, these apartments blocks are being built in every turns and corners. Most of them are what we called, ’shoebox’ apartments. The bedroom space is only enough for a queen bed, and sometimes even single. They are clearly built for the majority of students who prefers to stay in the city centre. With the property investment market blooming, gone are the nice view of the city. Now, the only things you see are apartment buildings. Some of them are built in very close proximities, the residents can probably peek into each other’s window, or even throw things into the opposite room. It’s like they are trying to fill up the spaces with apartments. The situation is getting so ridiculous, I just don’t understand how the city council (or whatever that department is involved) could have approved it. If the trend continue, in stead of city of sails, they should call Auckland city of apartments.

It’s no wonder people escape from Auckland city whenever possible.

p/s: don’t get me wrong, I still love the city, was on a ranting mood when I wrote the above. I guess when you have stayed in a city long enough, you see the flaws.

Hmmm…I thought there are lots of happenings down in Auckland. If Auckland is full of concrete jungle, then Wellington would even be worst as the capital city of NZ. Hehehe…if you like sheep and greenery, then opt for Christchurch. It’s quite a nice place there :)

But my sister just loves NZ. She’s been there and will be going back again somewhere between end of May and early June. She loves it there simply because Lord of the Rings was filmed there!! She’s a great fan. My aunt and her family just returned from their holidays there and they’re full of praise for NZ. They drove and covered both the north and the south islands. Call it whatever we want, shoe box apartments or pigeon holes, the air is still crisp and fresh there and I just love those golden kiwi fruits mmmm…..slurp!

I wouldn’t say it’s a concrete jungle, just way too many apartment buildings around if compared to 7 years ago. I would not describe nz as a happening place in general. Rather quiet and peaceful, just the way I like it. Christchurch is nice, but I just love Queenstown. :)

Of course, I still love it here, otherwise would not have stayed here till today. Just a rant, was in ranting mood when I wrote that. Haha. I guess just like residents in any city, you see the flaws when you stay there long enough.

    Me neither.

I didn’t believe it until I saw it with my own eyes.

I think it’s happening everywhere, a global phenomenon due to the scarcity of land in the city…landed property these days, cost both arms and both legs…

  7. zewt Says:

yeah, that’s how i perceive NZ. but i am also not blinded by the fact that every country needs development and as such… metropolitan cities are inevitable.

Tell me about it. How about both arms and legs of me and MR K. ;)

It’s true, it is inevitable. I just hope they don’t ruin the good things.
